The blobfish has very soft cartilaginous bones which easily compress to the extreme pressure of the deep sea without breaking.
It has a glutinous mass whose density is slightly less than that of water to enhance natural buoyancy while using up very little energy.
I think that's a bit harsh -- to me it's not hideous so much as bizarre looking.
